Make It - a t-shirt dress by Typical 90's Child

It's a guest post day. Today Alex of Typical 90's Child is sharing how to turn a t-shirt into a dress. Alex sells vintage clothing as well as custom vintage inspired clothing. Stop by her shop and check out all the fun stuff she has to offer.

I realize that this is a photo heavy post, and a lot of explaining will go with the pics, but honestly, it's such a quick and easy DIY that anyone who can do a simple straight stitch could easily make this!

All you will need are two men's shirts (I used XL ones), some lace or whatever else you would like to use to embellish it and a dress that you like the fit.

1. Fold both your dress and one of the T-shirts in half, lay the folded edges on top of each other and cut around the silhouette of your dress leaving some room for stitching. In the second picture you can see how I folded the sleeve along the seem to know where to cut my T-shirt.

2. At this point you should have something like this, turn it inside out and stitch the sides up (I know this is common sense, but just in case...leave the armholes open!)

3. Grab the original T-shirt sleeve that you cut off earlier, and take it in, one side should be the width of the arm opening, and the other should comfortably fit around your own arm.

4. If you've never done sleeves before, don't worry! Just pay attention and you'll be fine :)   Turn your T-shirt-dress inside out, but keep your sleeve the right side out. Insert your sleeve through the armhole, with the smaller part (sleeve cuff) going in first. Once inside, align the ends of seems A and B.

5. Attach the sleeve to the dress and stitch all the way around. Repeat process for other sleeve.

6. Normally I would cut open the neck a bit more, but I wanted to keep this one as simple as possible, so I just gathered my lace and attached it right below the existing collar.

I don't have a picture of that, but this is the best close up I have of it.

7. Now, you should have this, it's cute, but a bit plain...and incredibly short!

8. Time to get out the second T-shirt, and cut two even strips out of the middle. Discard the bottom hem of the shirt (I forgot to show this in the picture).

9. You will now have two circles of fabric, cut each piece only once as shown with the green line. This will give you 2 long strips of fabric, attach the two together, and gather lengthwise until they are the same width as the bottom of your dress.

10. Lay your gathered trim upside down, with the right sides together right above the existing hem of the T-shirt dress. Stitch it on, fold the ruffled edge down and enjoy!!! (I adjusted the exposure on this pic so you can see the black on black a bit better)

This is the finished dress, I haven't gotten much use out of it yet, but now that it's starting to get hotter here in San Diego, I know I'll be wearing it often. Because it's made out of a T-shirt, it's super comfy and makes you feel like you actually put in a little effort in the morning for those days that you just don't want to :)

I really hope some of you give this a go, if you do I'd love to see the end result! As always, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, you can either leave it in a comment below or e-mail me.

xoxo
Alex

Guest Post: Roasted Brussel Sprouts by Yen

While I'm out on the left coast I asked a couple of my favorite blogger ladies if they wanted to guest post. If you don't know Yen, she blogs over at Green House on Top of the Hill (woo that's a mouth full) and she shares a lot of yummy recipes on her blog. I think today's recipe would be good if you participate in Meatless Mondays. Be sure to stop by her blog and say hello.
So, Melissa is currently away in la la world of sunshine and palm trees and I have decided to crash her blog for the day. I'm Yen and I blog over at GHOTH. No, not goth in the music, but it's short for Green House on Top of the Hill. I blog mostly about food and that's what I'm here to share!

So, Melissa and I met over at Evani's Let's Get Physical link up sometime last year. We're always looking to eat healthier and today I'm excited to show you a quick, simple, one pan meal. I personally devoured this as is, but you can serve it as a side too.

Yes, roasted brussels sprouts. I've never ate brussels sprouts as a kid, so I don't have horror stories to share. When I finally tried it last year, my husband and I could not get enough! These itty bitty cabbages are heavenly roasted with just a bit of olive oil, sprinkle of salt and pepper and that's it. You know those days when you don't want to cook but you also don't feel like driving anywhere? Yea, that was me today. Instead, I quickly whipped this up. Trust me, if my husband likes roasted brussels sprouts, then you know it has to be good!

Hop on over to my blog to grab the recipe!

Thank Melissa for letting me guest post on your today and hope you see you guys there!

Hi Sarcastic Readers! This is Rima from Bolu by Rima! The awesome Melissa allowed me to be a part of her blog today! Today I’m blogging from McDonald’s. Why? Because they offer free wi-fi and their Dollar Menu is awesome. I can be full for under $5!

Being the list freak that I am, I love doing questionnaires and list my answers. Thanks to Melissa, she gave me a bunch of lists to pick from, so it got me giddy! I’m gonna share you 5 topics of the list that I pick J Let’s go!

• Things to collect - I collect cameras. Seriously. From toy cameras, polaroids, digitals... I want to have a medium format camera... and a brownie... you know just to collect. I seriously want to build a shrine for it. If I have the money, I would buy a lot of lenses for the SLR/DLSR as well. Boo. Too bad they’re expensive!

it has grown from here...
• My morning routine - on my work days, it would be: snoozing 3 times (6.04, 6.13, 6.22) and finally wake my self up. Check my email, facebook and instagram for about 4-5 minutes (such a time waster!) and then finally roll to the bathroom and get ready. Then, sit down in front of my mirror and put my cover-up make-up on (it such a hassle to have vitiligo!) which takes about 25 minutes. Then with the last 5 minutes, I quickly browse around the kitchen on what to eat and to bring for work... hence sometimes my poor food choices L oh well. Then I’m off to work! I really  need to stop snoozing!

• Dear [Robert aka the Pillow], you make me happy in the following ways... - *insert cheesy points here* The way you play with my hair... It gets annoying though when I'm driving; When you "poke" me virtually via text messages; When you force me to fist pump when a upbeat song comes up; When we're together and our song comes out of your iPod and we just pause; When you send postcards from your travels; When you force me to cuddle with you in the morning; When you play with Chimichanga; When you ask for my opinion when you purchase something for yourself; When you actually tell me that I need to start working out (it shows that you care about my physical body haha); When you're concentrating hard on your work/school while we're on our weekly Panera date; When you always ask me if I want something when you're buying something for yourself; When you suddenly grab & kiss my hand while you're driving; When you go wild when your team scores (football/soccer); When you eat something delicious and become speechless; When you compliment my cookings; When you surprise me with lilies; and the list goes on and on and on...

• Pet peeves - When people tail gait me...I can drive much slower if you do, you know; When I'm talking and you're paying attention to your phone, not me (makes me mad!); When you're super late while I'm on time and waiting for you!; Crying bratty children at the store/church/DMV/McDonalds...

With an extra hour in the day I would - Probably exercise. Hahah... NO! Sleep. You can never get enough sleep. Ever.

Anyhoo, if you haven't visited my blog, please pop by and say hi. I don't bite :)

Thanks Melissa for having moi!
